Atlantis Cup - Autonomy Regatta "a true tribute to the sea" with international projection, says Regional Director for Tourism

The Regional Director for Tourism stressed the importance of the Atlantis Cup - Autonomy Regatta. She considered it “a true tribute to the sea” with international projection, which contributes "to the promotion of the Azores as a nautical destination."

“This regatta is the largest sailing event held in our Region and also one of the most important moments of socialisation among sailing lovers on the islands where it takes place," stressed Marlene Damião, who spoke Tuesday in Horta at the prize-delivery ceremony.

The Regional Director stressed that “nautical tourism is undoubtedly a priority product that confers prestige to the Azores' tourism offer as a nature tourism destination. In fact, it contributes to the sustainable development of tourism and does not exhausts natural resources." In this regard, she added that "the role and commitment of nautical clubs in promoting water sports, both in their recreational and competitive components, has been of paramount importance."

Marlene Damião mentioned that the Autonomy Regatta has sought over the years "to be also a link between the islands, bringing together the participation of all those who find this event the best way to compete but also to socialise."

“This important event has always been associated with the Sea Week, one of the most popular summer festivals in the Azores among sea enthusiasts," stated the government official.

On the occasion, the Regional Director highlighted the "commitment and dedication" of Horta Nautical Club in the organisation of this regatta.

“For many decades, this entity has been promoting the dissemination of the Azores through the sea, a resource of utmost importance, with the annual organisation of various internationally-renowned activities and events," stated Marlene Damião. In this context, she also thanked "the efforts undertaken every year towards the promotion of the Azores through initiatives that highlight the sea" as "an element of utmost importance for our identity that distinguishes us and makes us look forward to the future with confidence.”
