Electric and sustainable mobility to become a reality in 2017, ensures Regional Director for Energy

The Regional Director for Energy assured this morning that the Regional Government is investing in new mobility models, encouraging the adoption and implementation of measures for a paradigm shift in mobility in order to render it sustainable and energy efficient.

Andreia Carreiro spoke in Cascais under the conference "Energy and Mobility for Smart Cities," adding that the Regional Government is implementing an electric, smart and sustainable mobility programme: Mob(in)Azores. At this time, "we are transposing and adapting national legislation and promoting the programme from a strategic and operational standpoint."

"Rather than just creating an infrastructure of charging stations, this is a robust and inclusive programme, whose consortium is composed of public and private organisations. It will contribute to the competitiveness of companies so that they may position themselves in the new paradigm of mobility, increasing economic sustainability and promoting a low carbon economy," said Andreia Carreiro.

In this follow-up, we are developing financial and non-financial incentive systems for the purchase of electric vehicles instead of vehicles with internal combustion engine, either in private vehicles or by public collective and individual passenger transport vehicles.

"This year, we will begin a process of replacing the internal combustion vehicle fleet of the regional administration for electric vehicles with monitoring consumption and fleet management to allow the assessment of environmental and financial impacts," stressed the Regional Director.

The implementation of this process will allow an efficient use of energy produced from renewable sources by smoothly including it into a charging station network. It will be managed by a smart platform that connects users, operators, vehicles and infrastructures in order to promote energy efficiency as well as to reduce CO2 emissions, costs on fossil fuels and the energy dependency of the Azores.
