Azores are part of European project to optimise electric mobility promotion policies

The Regional Directorate for Energy participated in the kick-off meeting of the European project designated as "E-MOBICITY – Increase of energy efficiency by Electric MOBIlity in the CITY," funded by the Interreg Europe programme in the amount of one million Euros, which aims to optimise public policies and the application of European funds towards the promotion of electric mobility.

The first meeting of the winning consortium, which includes the Regional Government, took place Tuesday and Wednesday in Athens. It brought together governments, research centres and business associations from Portugal, Greece, Croatia, Germany and Romania, which presented the case studies that are being developed in their regions towards the development of sustainable mobility.

Andreia Carreiro considered the presence of the Regional Directorate for Energy as “essential” at this first meeting of the project. In fact, at the beginning of this interregional learning process, it shared with partners “what is being implemented in the Azores to promote electric mobility."

For the Regional Director, the electrification of the land transport sector is “undoubtedly the best energy efficiency measure we can implement in the Region.”

“The characteristics of our islands, the short daily routes and regular roads are ideal for favouring the good performance of the electric vehicle, thus positioning the Azores as a privileged space for the adoption of electric mobility and for the development of pilot projects based on innovative and disruptive solutions in this matter,” stressed the government official.

According to Andreia Carreiro, the E-MOBICITY, implemented for a four-year period, will enable the Region to participate in a vast exchange of knowledge and experiences, “establishing the Azores in Europe as a reference island and outermost region in the field of electric mobility.”
