Angra do Heroísmo ,  September 30, 2010

“SOS cagarro” starts in the archipelago on Friday

The “SOS Cagarro 2010” (SOS Corey’s Shearwater 2010) Campaign starts on Friday. This initiative aims to alert the population for the need to preserve this protected species which nests in the Azores.
The campaign will run until 15 November, which coincides with the departure of young Cory’s Shearwaters from their nests to the first transoceanic flight.
For this reason, the campaign was organised with the purposing of involving the Azorean population in the rescue of these young birds that are found along the roads.
The official start of the “SOS Cagarro 2010” will take place at the S. Roque do Pico Secondary School on Friday at 10:30 AM in a session to be attended by Paulo Henrique Silva and Paulo Freitas, nature watchers, and by Carla Silva, technician from Pico Natural Park.
Meanwhile, this event will be celebrated across the archipelago with several activities. On the island of Flores an environmental film will be exhibited at the Boqueirão Environmental Interpretation Centre at 2:30 PM.
The Corvo Natural Park, in a joint initiative with the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) will organise several environmental awareness raising activities at the Mouzinho da Silveira Basic Education School, where students will make a video on how to help these birds.
In addition, an opening session dedicated to this subject is taking place at the Velas Basic Education and Secondary School and at the São Jorge Vocational Training School.
On the island of Faial, the Marine Education Network of the Azores (REMA) will organise a workshop titled “A viagem” (The journey), in which students from the Castelo Branco Kindergarten and Elementary School will address the main aspects regarding the species’ life.
At the same session, the nature watchers will teach children how to behave with the birds in question. This school will receive the “SOS Cagarro” kit and puzzles of Azorean marine species, to be delivered by the Faial Natural Park. Moreover, the Angra do Heroísmo “Ecoteca” (Environmental Awareness Raising Centre) on Terceira Island will hold a meeting with its partners and collaborators at 2:30 PM.
A public lecture featuring the participation of marine biologist Joana Pombo will take at the auditorium of the Dalberto Pombo Environmental Interpretation Centre on the island of Santa Maria.
The regional event will be celebrated on São Miguel with the exhibition of a film on this theme at the “tentorium” of “Portas do Mar,” followed by testimonies given by people involved in the rescue operations of these birds.
Further information on this year’s campaign will available on the website http://www.soscagarro.azores.gov.pt, email address [email protected] or at the Environmental Services of any island.
