This seminar also extended the coverage of themes to issues such as the Azores Geopark as environmental promotion and protection centres. In addition to the lecturers from the Azores, Madeira and Mainland Portugal, the seminar was also attended by dozens of professors and students of the University of the Azores.
The Regional Director for the Environment, Frederico Cardigos, mentioned Azorean biodiversity as a major “opportunity for sustainable development in the Azores, but also a source of enthusiasm and prestige.”
During the presentation with images of marine and terrestrial species in the archipelago, the Regional Director pointed out that the biodiversity of the Azores can “go on a journey over our own existence as inhabitants of these extraordinary islands,” adding that “many were the achievements occurred in the Azores in the International Year of Biodiversity, including the conclusion of the first comprehensive list of Azorean species to be presented soon.”
