Government of the Azores at the symposium of the Iberian-Macaronesian Association of Botanic Gardens
Two technicians from the Regional Directorate for the Environment are participating in the 10th symposium of the Iberian-Macaronesian Association of Botanic Gardens on “Jardins Botânicos – espaços para o future” (Botanic Garden – spaces for the future), which is taking place in the Spanish city of Malaga. The symposium will end on Friday.
The Faial Botanic Garden will present a poster at the forum with the motto “Metas para a conservação da fitodiversidade em Jardins Botânicos até 2010: o contributo do Jardim Botânico do Faial” (Goals for fitodiversity preservation in Botanic Gardens until 2010: the contribution of the Faial Botanic Garden.”
The role of Botanic Gardens has undergone a revolution over the last years, changing from a space conceived to plant acclimation to a space where there is a commitment between biodiversity preservation and raising educational and environmental awareness, and scientific investigation.
These themes, along with the management of collections, will be widely discussed at the symposium in Malaga.
The Iberian-Macaronesian Association of Botanic Gardens was created in 1985 and is formed by 24 gardens, 9 of which are Portuguese and the remaining 15 are Spanish.
This association has the purpose of disseminating the richness and the value of Portuguese and Spanish botanic gardens and creating common strategies regarding the management of collections, preservation, research and environmental education.
The General Assembly of the Iberian-Macaronesian Association of Botanic Gardens will be held in parallel with the symposium.
