Azores Biosphere Reserves participate in the celebrations of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Day

In the context of the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB), the Biosphere Reserve Day will be celebrated at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris on November 3.

This event features a cocktail which will feature products from biosphere reserves around the world, including products from the Azores Biosphere Reserves, such as cheese, wine, jams, and tartlets, among others, provided by local entities.

This participation will be an excellent opportunity for the dissemination of the Azores Biosphere Reserves (Corvo, Flores and Graciosa) as well as their gastronomic products.

Biosphere reserves are protected areas established by UNESCO worldwide, being the example of good practice in maintaining a balance between environmental quality and sustainable development.

In the case of the Azores, these protected areas comprise almost the islands' total area. This distinction recognises several important aspects worthy of being highlighted, such landscape, environmental, geological and cultural.

Since May 2009, the islands of Flores, Graciosa and Corvo islands have been chosen to join this global network of places where the preservation of landscapes, ecosystems and species is in line with a sustainable economic and human development.

This global network includes classified areas from all continents, such as Pantanal and Amazon (Brazil), Yellowstone and the Mojave Desert (USA) and Mount Olympus (Greece).
