Ten million Euros for relevant initiatives in tourism sector

Ten million Euros is the global amount with which the Government of the Azores will support a dozen of entities, under several interest programmes which were considered relevant for the development of tourism in the Azores.

The Tourism Association of the Azores, the Regional Observatory of Tourism, the naval clubs of Horta and Ponta Delgada, and the Union of Surfers and Bodyboarders of the Azores are among the entities supported by the Government.

At a moment when the tourism sector still requires special attention, the Government of the Azores develops in a partnership with several private entities related to the sector, a significant financial effort to promote tourism in the Region.

The funds comprised by the contract between the Government of the Azores and the entities aim to ensure the presence of the Azores in various tourism fairs – which are held among the main tourism markets – the organisation of several sports competitions as well as of other initiatives intended to rise the Azores to prominence abroad.

The Azores Islands Pro’09 which will be held in Ribeira Grande between August 25 and August 30, a qualification event for the WQS (World Qualifying Series) which will gather 200 notable surfers is among the events supported by the Government of the Azores.

In addition, the 15th Azores 2009 Paragliding Festival, an initiative of the Clube Asas d Atlântico de S. Miguel and of the INATEL which will gather 150 participants, including Lisa Houdry, world champion and Patrick Berod, French champion in 1991, 1993 and 2002, is another interest event considered relevant for Tourism, being supported by the Government of the Azores.
