The Pico Airport received its first commercial night flight today following the conclusion of the installation, certification and operation process of the runway lighting system, an investment of the Government of the Azores over one million Euros.
This first operation was undertaken by the SATA Air Açores flight 652 with one of the new Dash Q200 airplanes, recently purchased by the Azorean airline, carrying 19 passengers. The airplane landed at 5:20 PM and then made the flight 433 between Pico and Ponta Delgada.
With the accomplishment of this goal, another stage of the development plan for the Pico airport that has been implemented by the Azorean Government is completed.
The investment in that infrastructure has exceeded 25 million Euros over the last years and comprises interventions such as the expansion of the runway, the construction of the new terminal and of all the lighting infrastructures, new air navigation aid systems, fire fighting equipments, a control tower and an apron, among others.
