Fall River ,  August 28, 2011

Holy Spirit Festivities in New England demonstrate the vitality of the Azorean emigrant community

The celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Holy Spirit Festivities in New England “is not only a demonstration of faith, but also a great demonstration of love for the Azores as evidenced by the thousands of emigrants from various parts of the United States, Canada and even from other countries that annually gather at the Kennedy Park in Fall River,” stated the Regional Secretary for the Economy on Saturday.

Vasco Cordeiro spoke at the end of the “bodo de leite” that passed through some of the streets of Fall River on Saturday and highlighted the “massive presence of youngsters in the parade” which demonstrates the vitality of the Azorean emigrant communities.

The government official, who considered “a tremendous honour” to able to participate in these festivities on behalf of his Region, also defended that “this should also be a moment to remember the group of men and women who have begun these celebrations and who are still their soul.”

“From the founder of the Holy Spirit Festivities in New England, Heitor de Sousa, to the group of people who continue to work in their organisation, all are worthy of a word of appraisal  for their commitment and dedication,” said Vasco Cordeiro.

On a day of bad weather that was felt throughout the State of Massachusetts, due to the approach of Hurricane Irene, Vasco Cordeiro stressed “the great determination and strength of will demonstrated by all those who were attending the event which have not prevented them to celebrate the traditions of their islands or from their places of origin.”

“This is a significant demonstration of love for the land the left one day out, the love for our culture and traditions, thus being a reason that should fill us with pride,” added Vasco Cordeiro.

“With rain and wind, here at Kennedy Park, wherever there is an Azorean, it is a day to celebrate the Azores,” stated the Regional Secretary in a speech welcomed with great enthusiasm by the hundreds of people attending the event under the heavy rain that fell during most of the parade.
