Government extends secondary education to the island of Corvo next year

The Government of the Azores will extend secondary education to Corvo island starting next school year, announced the Regional Secretary for the Economy, Vasco Cordeiro, during his visit to Corvo on Tuesday morning.

According to the government official, this decision "has already been taken" and will be implemented "through a better use of the existing teaching staff on Corvo." For Vasco Cordeiro, this measure "will provide this island with better conditions to ensure the access to education for local youngsters." The extension of secondary education to this island also assures "that youngsters may attend school without leaving their family and social environment."

For Vasco Cordeiro, this decision "also demonstrates the effort undertaken by the Government of the Azores in the archipelago in order to promote economic and social cohesion so that may better respond to current challenges." "A strategy", he said, "that also takes into account the specificities of each island."

In the case of Corvo, "there are several examples evidencing the Government's concern, such as the construction of the Elderly Home and the work developed by the local "Santa Casa da Misericórdia or the interventions carried out in the local aerodrome."

In addition to these interventions, Vasco Cordeiro, who visited Porto da Casa this morning, also highlighted the decision taken by the Azorean Government during the last statutory visit to the island: conduct a study to assess the technical, operational and budget feasibility of the expansion works of the current pier. The project is currently at an implementation phase. "This work is includes the expansion of the boat parking area and the pier."

This investment, he added, "provides the island of Corvo with better conditions to promote its integration into the Region's economic space and improve its maritime accessibilities." These factors will allow Corvo to have better conditions for boosting its economy."
