Rui Bettencourt highlights role of Houses of the Azores around the world for the development of the Region

The Regional Assistant Secretary of the Presidency for External Relations highlighted today in Ponta Delgada the important role of the Houses of the Azores around the world for the development project of the Region.

"We are in a very interesting time as we become aware that the Azoreans living in the archipelago and around the world, more than one million, have their voice through thousands of Azoreans who are proud Azoreans, who are committed Azoreans and who wish to participate in the Azorean project," said Rui Bettencourt.

The government official spoke at the end of a meeting with the President of the House of the Azores of Rio Grande do Sul, Carla Marques Gomes, considering that this institution is "a symbol of what the Houses of the Azores are in the world and also a symbol of what the Azoreans are in the world."

According to the Regional Secretary, it is "very interesting" to see that there are Azorean emigrants who have settled in the States of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina over 200 years ago, i.e., 5th, 6th and 7th generation descendants who still "consider themselves as Azoreans."

"These Azoreans living in Brazil have strong ties to the Azores and, in this context, the visit of various Azoreans through the House of the Azores of Rio Grande do Sul is also a strategy to bring Azorean communities around the world closer to the Azores," said the Regional Secretary.

Rui Bettencourt mentioned the delegation of 12 people, led by the president of the House of the Azores of Rio Grande do Sul, who is visiting this week the islands of São Miguel, Terceira, Pico and Faial in the context of a project developed by this institution to promote the archipelago as a tourist destination.

For the Regional Secretary, today's meeting was "another demonstration of this Azorean identity in the world." It was an opportunity to explain and show what the Azores are today, with special emphasis on the Azorean project and how the Azoreans around the world can participate in it.

"The strategy involves the creation of an Azorean Diaspora Council," the government official said, noting that institutions, such as the Houses of the Azores, will be invited to be "the vehicle for disseminating the role of the Azorean Diaspora Council to the Azorean communities around the world."

The intention is to "involve the Azoreans around the world and unite the Azoreans around the world in this Azorean project."

With regard to the Azorean Diaspora Council, the Regional Secretary recalled that a Parliamentary Committee had already addressed this subject at the Legislative Assembly. According to him, the proposal will be under discussion at the plenary session so that the establishment of this Council may be later explained in detail and how Azorean may take part in it. The Council is expected to be functioning within one year.
