Azorean Government highlights work and positive results of Representation Office in Brussels

The Azorean Government considered that the core competencies of the Representation Office of the Autonomous Region of the Azores in Brussels "have been fully and successfully assumed."

"The positive results achieved, the efficient mobilisation and the good implementation in Brussels are conducive to the maintenance of this entity and its competencies as well," says the Government in the response sent to the Legislative Assembly, following a request submitted by PSD on the Representation Office in Brussels. These reasons justify the decision to extend the term of office of the Mission Structure.

The document points out that the Office's activity is "consistent with both the Government's Programme and the established Mission," focusing on strategic surveillance, influence, contact network, information and logistical support. This structure is in line with the four action axes on which its strategy is based. It operates "either as an channel of information or as a channel of communication, conveying the Azorean Government's position with EU institutions as a complement to the Government's direct actions."

The Regional Government also highlights the recent protocol signed with the Azores Agricultural Federation, which now has a permanent technician at the Office in Brussels. This protocol falls under the representation axis of the Azores, their government, their society and social partners. The goals set for this axis "have been fully accomplished."

It is also worth mentioning the sending of approximately 650 emails to the Azorean Government. They allowed the members of the Government and its services to be informed on the most important matters in various areas and to "take action in a timely and effective manner" in various situations. Furthermore, the office released 55 issues of its weekly newsletter, which highlighted more than 2,000 pieces of information.

As for the work carried out by the Azores Office in Brussels, the Government's document mentions the participation in 138 meetings and events, in addition "to various direct or other contacts established with EU institutions. The office also provided logistical support to the Azorean Government and to social and political forces in more than 50 meetings regarding sectoral matters with the President of the EU Commission and several Commissioners as well as with Committee of the Regions, interregional associations and Community institutions."

The Azorean Government states that the development of the Office's mission in Brussels "involves the work and coordination, at different levels, of the different departments" of the Government of the Azores, requiring the "intermittent presence" of members of the Government, members of Regional Secretariats and Regional Public Administration technicians. At the office, they address several European matters in various departments under the administration of the Regional Assistant Secretary for External Relations.

"In 2018, the Office in Brussels received two senior training technicians (a holder of a Master's degree in Political Science and International Relations and a holder of a degree in Law). Currently, a senior training technician with a degree in Political Science is working at this office."

The Office is registered in the European Union Transparency Register and in the Committee of the Regions "in order to facilitate the movement of the members of the Azores Office in Brussels towards the institutionalisation of their presence and the enhancement of their visibility."

The Coordinator of the Azores Office in Brussels "is accredited by the Council of the European Union as an adviser to Portugal," which grants him access to all European institutions. Additionally, the Office staff is "systematically and individually accredited" in the European Parliament as well as in the Committee of the Regions.
