Third edition of "Azores: Sea cultures" extended to the themes of emigration and Diaspora

The Government of the Azores promotes this year the third edition of the "Azores: Sea of cultures" initiative to promote interculturalism and encourage the Azorean young people to enhance their knowledge on migratory phenomena and their importance in the Azores of today.

Organised by the Regional Directorate for Communities, this year' edition has a broader scope, covering the themes of emigration and the Azorean Diaspora, which will be added to the themes of immigration.

The initiative, which involves the use of new communication and image technologies, is directed to all 10th and 11th form students enrolled at regional schools as well as to students attending level 4 vocational training courses.

In order to participate in the contest, students must compete in groups of three and submit a work in video format on the theme of immigration in the Azores until May 31; it may be presented as journalistic or historical report or even as a creative story. The group should also include a teacher, who will be charge of monitoring the development of the project.

The winning team and the teacher will be rewarded with a trip to Brazil to be held during the month of September, during which they will have the opportunity to become acquainted with the culture and traditions of the country hosting one of the most important Azorean communities in the Diaspora and the homeland of one of the most representative immigrant community in the Azores.

The group of students from the School of New Technologies of the Azores, Ana Amaral, Olívia Taveira and Tatiana Teves, won the first edition of this competition that took place in 2014. They were awarded a trip to Geneva, Switzerland, where they visited the International Organisation for Migrations and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Last year, the winners of the contest were a group of students from Ribeira Grande Secondary School. The winning team, composed of students Inês Furtado, Filomena Gonçalves and António Garcia, had the opportunity to visit the archipelago of Cape Verde.

Further information on the "Azores: Sea of Cultures" Contest and the respective application form are available on the page of Regional Directorate for Communities on the Regional Government portal at http://www.azores.gov.pt/Portal/pt/entidades/pgra-ssrpre-drcomunidades.
