Regional Director for the Communities highlights potential of diaspora organisations in disseminating the Azores

The Regional Director for the Communities highlighted in Angra do Heroísmo the importance of organising initiatives that "promote the contact and knowledge of the Azorean diaspora with the present-day reality of the Region."

Speaking at the "The Azores and the Diaspora" session held under the Terceira-Canada Friendship course, running until March 21, Paulo Teves highlighted the role of organisations and their potential in disseminating the Azores.

"Notwithstanding the efforts undertaken by the organisations of our diaspora to support the preservation of Azorean identity through the numerous cultural manifestations, there is also a significant potential in the dissemination of the Azores of today, their specifics and their potentialities," said Paulo Teves.

The Regional Director for the Communities also emphasised that course participants, after several working sessions and scheduled visits, should be able to take "a more comprehensive action" in their communities. It is important that they reach new generations "in order to make them feel part of the diaspora, not only in terms of its dynamics but also in the process of development of the Azores."

For four days, eight members of Terceira-Canadá Friendship Association will participate in various working sessions that will address topics concerning the Azorean communities, tourism, investment opportunities, education, youth, European affairs and culture.

Participants will also have the opportunity to visit spaces of reference in various sectors, including Terceira Tech Island, TERINOV - Terceira Science and Technology Park, the University of the Azores and the Quinta dos Açores project, among others.

This initiative is organised in partnership between the Regional Government through the Regional Directorate for the Communities and the Terceira-Canada Friendship Association with the support of the municipal councils of Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória.

The Terceira-Canadá Friendship Association was founded in Toronto with the mission of promoting and preserving cultural traditions from Terceira and the Azores in the Azorean community residing in the province of Ontario, such as the organisation of the 2nd "Alcatra" Festival (traditional beef pot roast from Terceira); this year's edition gathered hundreds of people.
