Regional Director for Communities defends importance of promoting Portuguese language in the Diaspora

The Regional Director for Communities defended in Hamilton the importance of the Portuguese language as "an asset in promoting a social and professional future as well as in strengthening intergenerational relations."

Paulo Teves spoke Wednesday at the end of a visit to Bermuda Portuguese School and Vasco da Gama Club. He stressed that Portuguese language "has significant importance nowadays, whether in a wider range of opportunities or in the relation with other Portuguese-speaking peoples. Its promotion outside Portugal "should be a mission carried out by everyone, starting with parents encouraging their children to learn Portuguese."

During the meeting with the Board of the 82-year-old Vasco da Gama Club, the Regional Director had the opportunity to become acquainted with the projects under development regarding the actions carried out by the Portuguese School. Moreover, he also learned about other cultural initiatives developed within the Portuguese community; the latter is estimate to represent about 20-25% of Bermuda's total population.

In the three-day visit to this British overseas territory, Paulo Teves also met with the Board of the House of the Azores of Bermuda, with which the Regional Directorate for Communities signed a cooperation protocol.

"It is essential that the Azorean Diaspora play an increasingly active role in the community where it belongs," said the Regional Director. In this regard, he stressed the importance of "exploring all the possibilities of interaction with the local community, disseminating the archipelago's reality and taking active part in the host society."

"The Government of the Azores welcomes the willingness of the Azorean people to maintain their emotional ties with the archipelago and the commitment they to work towards the full integration of Azorean emigrants and to be active players in the development of our Region," stressed the Regional Director.

Paulo Teves also highlighted the existence of the House of the Azores insofar as it "contributes to the affirmation of the Azores in the world." According to him, the development of initiatives about the Region in Bermuda demonstrates the "pride of being Azorean even far from the islands and the willingness to know the land of origin of thousands of emigrants residing in this archipelago."

Founded in 2015, this House of the Azores became part of the World Council of Houses of the Azores in 2016 at the General Assembly held on the islands of Flores and Corvo. This session, attended by all members of this organisation, was intended to disseminate its goals as well as the various actions planned for the coming years.

Also during the visit to the Azorean community of Bermuda, the Regional Director had the opportunity to meet with the new Minister of Home Affairs, Walton Brown, and the Director of the Department of Culture, Heather Whalen. During these meetings, he pointed out "the historical relation between both archipelagos that strengthens the development of common projects "in several areas."

Today, the last day of the visit, Paulo Teves meets with the Board of Bermuda National Gallery, an institution that hosts and promotes various cultural events.
