Diaspora community associations are partners in promoting the "Azoreans in the World" platform, stresses Regional Director for the Communities
The Regional Director for the Communities highlighted in the United States of America the "partnership" established with the community associations of the diaspora in the promotion of the "Azoreans in the World" platform.
"We are in a moment of affirming of our presence in the world, which will contribute to the unity of the Azorean People spread throughout the world," said Paulo Teves at a meeting with the Board and partners of the House of the Azores of Hilmar, California. On the occasion, he stressed that "organisations are, par excellence, spaces for the promotion and support of this new project."
"The Houses of the Azores play an important role in preserving our identity, but they are also extensions of the reality of our islands that must be disseminated among new generations," stressed the Regional Director. In this regard, he considered that we should develop initiatives in order to address the needs of different audiences, namely emigrants and their descendants.
Promoted by the new President of the House of the Azores of Hilmar, Daniel Varela, the meeting was an opportunity to disseminate the various actions planned for this year, with special emphasis on the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Açoreano Sport Club, the institution's football team.
On the occasion, Paulo Teves stressed the importance of marking this event as a "recognition of the Azoreans who have defended the name of the Azores over the course of five decades," noting that it is also "a way of congregating young people that deserves to be encouraged and supported.”
The House of the Azores of Hilmar was founded in 1977 with the aim of providing Azorean emigrants with opportunities to preserve and disseminate the values of their homeland as well as to assist them through the creation of a centre for this purpose.
With its own headquarters, this House of the Azores has a traditional guitar group and a school for the teaching of this instrument, a folk dance group and a traditional Carnival dance group, besides a football team.
It is a founding member of the World Council of Houses of the Azores, having organised its 17th General Assembly in 2014.
Also, in this visit to California, the Regional Director for the Communities also attended the second night of the presentation of the traditional Carnival dances in the city of San José, where he presented the "Azoreans in the World" platform in sessions held at the premises of the Nova Aliança Philharmonic Band and the Portuguese Band of San José.
