Regional Director for European Affairs presents action plan for second phase of "Islands of Innovation" project

The Regional Director for European Affairs presented in Ponta Delgada the Action Plan for the "Islands of Innovation" project, thus marking the beginning of the second phase of this project. It will include the implementation of actions aimed at introducing improvements in the Azorean innovation ecosystem.

"After the first phase of the project, which consisted of the assessment of the Region's innovation level and the identification of good practices, a second phase has now begun, which will include the implementation of a plan with four global actions between 2020 and 2021," said Celia Azevedo. She spoke at the 6th meeting of stakeholders of the "Islands of Innovation" project, during which these actions were presented and discussed with the project's regional partners.

On the occasion, the Regional Director highlighted the fact that these four actions are "in line with the main goal of creating synergies and structured dialogue practices on innovation issues, involving the civil society, public and private institutions, the business sector and knowledge centres."

Celia Azevedo added that the actions to be developed "were designed in order to foster knowledge and proximity," including activities to be held throughout the archipelago, training sessions, the application of the project's methodological tool, the dissemination of information, the monitoring of projects and the implementation of good innovation practices.

In the Azores, this project will focus on the areas identified in the Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3 Azores): Fisheries and Sea, Agriculture, Livestock and Agribusiness, and Tourism.

The "Islands of Innovation" project falls within a regional strategy for innovation. It involves, among other initiatives, the creation of the Regional Innovation Council, the preparation and implementation of the Azores Agenda for Innovation and the evaluation and review process of RIS3, ensuring its integration into the post-2020 Community framework.

"Islands of Innovation" is a project developed within the INTERREG Europe programme under implementation since 2017, which involves the participation of seven regions: Azores and Madeira, Friesland (Netherlands), Urban Community of North Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe (France), Samso (Denmark), Kuressaare (Estonia) and North Aegean Region (Greece). It is focused on opportunities to diversify the economies of partner island regions, through the improvement of their innovation policies.
