Azorean students participate in meeting of young scientists from across the world in Lisbon
A team of four students from Lagoa Secondary School on the island of S. Miguel will represent Portugal at the 22nd edition of the “European Contest of Young Scientists” (EUCYS) to take place in Lisbon between September 24 and 29, with the project Programa de Biomonitorização da Doença Vibroacústica (Biomonitoring Programme of the Vibroacoustic disease), a disease caused by excessive exposure to low frequency sounds.
This Grand Final, sponsored by the Youth Foundation in conjunction with the European Commission, will gather 132 youngsters from 39 countries, aged between 15 and 20 years, at the Museum of Electricity.
A total of 88 scientific and research projects will be in competition. The prizes, which will be awarded on September 28 in the presence of the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Mariano Gago, and the Minister of Education, Isabel Alçada, not only include a monetary prize, but also the opportunity for winners to do a traineeship at an international laboratory of reference, through the European Patent Office and the EIROforum - a body made up of seven European intergovernmental organisations which are world leaders in various fields of science.
The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Youth, supports the participation of the Azorean team in this international event, awarding a similar support that allowed the participation of Azorean young scientists from the same school in I-SWEEP 2009 (International Sustainable World - Energy, Engineering and Environment - Project Olympiad), held in Houston. The Azorean team presented the project “Rota das Lagoas 27,” which consisted in a study on the quality of water and the trophic state of the Lagoa do Canário (Crater Lake), located in the Sete Cidades Massif on São Miguel. The project received an Honourable Mention.
