The Government of the Azores will award a financial support to the AgroCapelense Cooperative, CRL, in order to control the so-called Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) on the island of São Miguel.
Allocated by an ordinance of the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry, the governmental support, the amount being of 12,244 Euros, aims to reinforce the fruit production in the farms threatened by this plague.
Regarding the ordinance published in the Official Journal published last Friday, Noé Rodrigues also states that in terms of effectiveness as an eco-friendly method, there are “innovative systems” to effectively control this plague, which “consolidates the agricultural production systems that are compatible with the principles of sustainable and safety agriculture for consumers.”
The Regional Secretary also justifies the awarding of the support given that cooperative from São Miguel Island plays “a very important role for the development and strengthening of the agricultural and animal husbandry activities as well as in the intervention and provision of support to its associates.”
