Government reinforces quality of regional wine production

The Government of the Azores will continue to support the Regional Wine Commission of the Azores (CVR) to improve its action in the certification of wines by “adapting the entire legal structure that regulates the activity in the Region.”
This statement was made by the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry at the inauguration ceremony of new president of the CVR Açores, which took place on the island of Pico.
Noé Rodrigues stated that the legal basis of wine production in the Azores should be adjusted to the regional needs and revealed that “a quality product will be put in the market.
The Wine Commission of the Azores is a regional association founded in 1995 which is in charge of monitoring the origin; ensuring the authenticity; promoting wine products with the Designation of Origin and Geographical Indication; boosting wine production and control; defining the production process in addition to promoting the internal and external defence of the wine denominations “Biscoitos,” “Pico” and “Graciosa.
The CVR Açores annually certifies an average of 20 wines from the Azores, among “Regional Açores” wine or VLQPRD (Quality Liquor Wine Produced in a Denominated Region). Since its foundation, this wine commission has already certified about 1.5 million litres of wine.
In order to tackle the competitiveness of the wine market in addition to the increased quality of the currently produced wines, the CVR Açores has been undertaking a great effort with the purpose of reinforcing and improving its position in the market through the collaboration in scientific projects in the area of wine production (Project on the traditional Azorean grape varieties) and oenology (Project for the Technological Improvement of the Azores Wines).
