In a joint initiative between the Ribeira Grande City Hall, a class from the Ribeira Grande Secondary School and another from the Gaspar Fructuoso Basic Education School, the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Forestry organised the afforestation of an area at the Jardim do Paraíso (garden) with endemic species. This event will take place on Tuesday, World Water Day, starting at 2 PM.
The endemic species to be planted are a display of all endemic woody plants of the Azores, produced in the seedling nurseries of the Forest Services.
With the support of students and City Hall workers, under the technical guidance of Forest Services, the following endemic species will be planted: Holly, Laurustinus, Azores Juniper, Azores Laurel Cherry, Azores Laurel, Picconia Azorica, Azorean Heather, Azores Blueberry and Aiton.
This space is intended to make all visitors better acquainted with the endemic plants of the Azores as well as the “Ecoteca” (Environmental Awareness Raising Centres) users, who are also participating in this event as the International Year of Forests is being celebrated under the motto “Forests for all.”
With the creation of multiple spaces with native plants, spread across several Azorean villages, we are promoting the knowledge on the endemic Azorean flora and simultaneously preserving their existence for the forthcoming generations.
