Government promotes biological agriculture in the Azores

The Government of the Azores promotes a campaign of sensitization for incitement of the biological agriculture spread out to several islands that is lengthened to 28th September.

The initiative, currently in the islands Graciosa, Faial, Pico, São Jorge and Terceira, happens in two phases, being that the first one has as objective preparing an inquiry in each agricultural exploration, contacting directly potential biological farmers, in the way of obtaining an evaluation of the general situation, namely as for its characterization, type of production and to the interest of the businessman in the implementation of that healthiest considered agriculture.

The Executive is going to carry out, subsequently, at island level, a meeting with all the intervenient farmers to move them regarding to the advantages of the practice of the biological agriculture, proceeding to the diffusion of the supports at the technical level, whether for the production, whether still for the marketing and information on the markets and their specificity.

With this campaign developed in collaboration with the BioAzórica Cooperative and in a joint action of the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Forestry, the Azorean executive intends to promote an agricultural production that contributes to the supported growth of the biological agriculture and that can contribute to the preservation of the environment and the improvement of the quality of the products.

The participation of the farmers in these actions, which began on 18th of this month, has been settled as very positive, being appreciated a participation, in this first phase, of more than 200 farmers regarding those five islands.

The biological agriculture has been increasing in the Region, being, however, more space out for this type of agriculture, which great advantage is to optimize the resources of the agricultural exploration, to reduce the use of imported means of production and the exemption of manure and of synthetic pesticides.

To move the Azorean farmers for the benefits and advantages of the biological agriculture, in the productive and economical areas, articulating them with benefits for the image of the agricultural products of the Azores, positively connected with the Environment and the quality of life.
