Velas, São Jorge ,  March 05, 2009

Government organises information sessions about credit-lines for the agricultural sector

The Regional Government of the Azores will organise information sessions about the modalities of credit lines that have been made available to farmers of all islands of the archipelago. Its objective is to insure that all farmers can access this financial assistance.

This initiative was announced by the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry at the end of a meeting with the agricultural associations of the island of São Jorge.

The venatic calendar that has been published in that island and the need to curtail the growing numbers of wild rabbits in São Jorge were debated at the meeting.

The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry said that he has asked the forestry services to, in conjunction with the producers' organisations and with farmers, analyse and propose, if necessary, exceptional measures for curtailing the number of wild rabbits on the island of São Jorge.

In his two-day visit to the island of São Jorge, the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry also met with the Administration of UNIQUEIJO to analyse the financing and the construction of the new milk-processing factory of Beira.

Regarding this matter, the Secretary said that he is glad to learn that the implementation of the project of the new milk-processing factory is "financially sound and well executed."

He added that construction of the new factory is near completion and that soon after the equipment tests are undertaken it will be ready to be inaugurated.

The question of the provision of water to farms located in the Agricultural Planning Perimeter (POA) Beira/Rosais, where the Regional Government is already constructing an Integrated System for the Provision of Water, a project that benefited initially from the collaboration of the municipality of Velas. Later on, the City Hall of Velas sent a letter to the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Forestry informing that it was unavailable to collaborate in the implementation of the project.

In order to insure the implementation of the project and the continued access of farmers to water, the Regional Government sent a geologist to the island of São Jorge with the task of finding the best locale for extracting water to supply the farms of that island.
