The Regional Government of the Azores will support PROFRUTOS in the modernization of its installations. The aim is to provide this association of producers with the necessary conditions to improve its management capacities.
The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry announced this offer of assistance on Thursday at the end of a meeting with leaders of the aforementioned association. At this meeting, the modernisation project of the association was presented.
This initiative is part of the Strategic and Operational Plan for the valorisation of the Azorean pineapple industry that was initiated approximately two and a half years ago by the Regional Government of the Azores.
The Strategic and Operational Plan consists of three objectives: improving modes of production, promoting accessibility to markets and modernising organisational processes. The Regional Government will provide PROFRUTOS with the structural conditions that are necessary for the achievement of these goals.
Noé Rodrigues, the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry, said that this initiative “in addition to addressing such aspects as packaging, weighting and depositing also ensures the possibility of utilizing unsold pineapples in the production of derivative products.”
The Secretary said that this measure demonstrates that the Regional Government continues to insure the economic valorisation of pineapple production, a traditional industry “that is profoundly embedded in Azorean culture.”
