The island of Flores will produce 87% of its electricity needs from renewable sources in the short term.
The announcement was made by the Regional Secretary for the Environment and by the Chairman of EDA, during a visit to the construction of the new thermal power station, a modern unit that will grant electricity production, in the case of catastrophe or other event, thus freeing space in the existing mixed power plant in order to expand water energy.
Alamo Meneses also explained that the percentage of renewable energy will be ensured with the construction of a new water power plant.
The chairman of EDA, Roberto Amaral, also revealed to journalists that the production of renewable energy may even come close to 100%, with the reinforcement of the wind energy, which is under study.
The Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea was pleased by a fact revealed at the occasion: the island of Flores was exclusively dependent on electricity from renewable sources during 12 nights in October, a case that he considered unique in the Region and in the remaining country and very rare in the world.
The new power station will be provided with five generators with a total of 3.6 megawatts of installed capacity, represents a 12.5 million Euro investment.
