The Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea said today in Horta that it is urgent to reflect upon the way we “use our planet and its resources.”
Álamo Meneses spoke at the Azorean Parliament and pointed out that the human population has been rapidly growing, yet the available resources have not increased in the same proportion, thus making the palnet increasingly “smaller.”
With regard to a brief statement concerning the celebration of Earth’s Day that took place today, the Secretary said that these resources are not renewable and become quickly depleted.
For the Regional Secretary, it is necessary that everyone, not just politicians, reflects upon this worrying reality that entails us all.
Álamo Meneses stated that the Earth’s Day, despite being a relatively recent celebration, has led to “a great mobilisation and it was capable of bear fruit.”
April 22 was the designated day, at a global level, to celebrate the Earth’s Day in 1990, paving the way for the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, known as Earth Summit’92, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, on June 22, 1992.
