Regional Government and Calheta Town Hall sign contract for construction of camping park in Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo

The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and the Environment stressed on São Jorge Island that the "understanding" between the Government of the Azores and Calheta Town Hall, through a cooperation agreement amounting to 800 thousand Euros, allows the recovery and remodelling of traditional pedestrian trails within Fajã de Santo Cristo. It also includes the installation of a support, reception and rest area for visitors.

"If we join efforts and leverage synergies, we can do a lot in our Region," noted Luís Neto Viveiros. The government official spoke Wednesday during the signing of the ARAAL Cooperation Contract with municipal authorities at Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo Interpretation Centre.

According to the Secretary for the Environment, this agreement contributes to the promotion of important landscape and natural heritage of São Jorge and the Azores. It gives effect to a decision of the Council of Government taken at the meeting held during the last Statutory Visit to this island.

Luís Neto Viveiros also highlighted the quality of the project, presented at the ceremony, stressing that it "respects" the environmental preservation and local culture. Currently, this place includes the latest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve to be classified in the Azores, following an application submitted by the Region during this term.

In his speech, the government official pointed out that this is a common project, "not only for the island's municipalities but also for the population and its living forces." Now, our priority is to "enhance" the international projection of Fajãs of São Jorge island and local products.
