Regional Secretary for the Environment participates in field action for census of seagulls and registration of Cory's Shearwaters
The Azores are “a rich depository” of seabirds and it is our duty to “maintain an updated census of the evolution of these populations.”
This assessment was conveyed by the Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea at the Capelinhos Volcano during a field action for census of seagulls and registration of Cory's Shearwaters.
According to Álamo Meneses, the Region, being aware of that responsibility, has signed “contracts with several entities to monitor continuously” seabird populations in the archipelago.
These entities include with the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) and the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries (DOP) of the University of the Azores which will also monitor the evolution of seabird populations that pass through the archipelago.
With regard to his participation in the field action which takes place in the Capelinhos Volcano area, Álamo Meneses stated that this action intends “to raise the awareness of the Azorean population for the Azores as a seabird habitat” and to disseminate “the work that has been carried out in that area by the Government and its partner entities.”
