Porto Pim Aquarium - Live Fish Station received over five thousand visitors in five months

The Porto Pim Aquarium on the island of Faial has increased the number of species on display. Since its opening to the public on June 20, it has already received over five thousand visitors, thus complying with the Regional Government's goal of enhancing the knowledge on the Sea.

Integrated in the Monte da Guia Complex, the Live Fish Station has already displayed species that, otherwise, could hardly be seen live by visitors, such as the case of pearly razorfish (Xyricthys novacula) and common stingray (Dasyatis pastinaca).

The Porto Pim Aquarium is also one of the first aquariums to receive a large amount of pilot fish (Naucrates ductor) specimens, about eighty.

Due to their beauty, the swallowtail seaperch species (Anthias anthias) also stood out in this live fish transfer station, before being moved to public aquariums in Asia.

The Government of the Azores intends to provide visitors of Porto Pim Aquarium with the opportunity of having greater access to the knowledge of the Azores Sea. In this context, education, environmental awareness raising and the recovery of sensitive marine animals are the main tasks assigned by the Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources, through Faial Natural Park, in partnership with a local young company.

Some of the most common coastal species can be found in Porto de Pim Aquarium. It also features an exhibition on the Azores Marine Park and the exhibition of a film on the deep sea in continental shelf contiguous to the archipelago.

The Monte da Guia Complex in Horta comprises the Dabney House and the Porto Pim Aquarium.
