Ordinance regulating support for producers with difficulties in exporting live cattle from Flores and Corvo after Hurricane Lorenzo already sent for publication

The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry revealed that he has already signed and sent for publication in the Official Journal the ordinance regulating the granting of additional compensation to Flores and Corvo farmers, who have suffered losses arising from difficulties in exporting live animals, following the passage of hurricane Lorenzo in October 2019.

“At the end of last week, we received the opinions of the agricultural associations from the islands of Corvo and Flores regarding the proposal for ordinance submitted by the Regional Directorate for Agriculture. They were duly considered and contributed to the preparation of the final document, which has now been sent for publication in the Official Journal," said João Ponte. Accordingly, the Regional Government is fulfilling the commitment made to farmers and producers' organisations from the Western Group islands.

The government official stressed that, from the very first hour, the Regional Government has been standing by farmers and working hard to minimise the losses they have suffered as a result of Hurricane Lorenzo, which had a very relevant impact on the Western Group islands.

João Ponte stressed that, according to the current estimates, the Regional Government will support more than 160 farmers from Flores and Corvo who have suffered losses caused by the maintenance of the animals on the farms after their optimal expedition period has been exceeded.

The financial compensation to be granted takes the form of non-reimbursable support and will be calculated considering, among other aspects, the number of days the animal remained on the farm, between October 9, 2019 and the date of shipment; the last transport operation took place on February 28.

Regarding the additional support scheme for the acquisition of fibrous feed for livestock on the islands of Flores and Corvo, João Ponte stated that the Government supported the acquisition of around 1,000 tonnes in the amount of 70 thousand Euros.
