Massive participation in the Environment Olympiads

The teachers’ growing concern with the promotion of environmental awareness and training of youngsters was reflected in the massive participation of students in the 1st round of the 15th edition of the Environment Olympiads. Nearly 40 thousand youngsters have tried to reach the Azorean final.

The first round of the category “Environment in Competition” (Ambiente à Prova) was held in 567 schools across Portugal on January 14, 2010. The participation of youngsters exceeded all expectations. Nearly 31,235 students, from the 7th to 9th form, from 499 schools participated in this round in the Junior Category whilst 9700 students, from the 10th to 12th form, from 246 schools participated in the Senior Category. Aiming to reach the National Final, 1797 High School students and 1029 Senior High School students were selected for the second stage. With regard to the presence of Azorean students in the National Final, 70 High School students and 52 Senior High School students have remained in the competition.

The second round of the category “Environment in Competition” took place at all schools whose students have been selected for this stage on March 4 at 2:30 PM (1:30 Azores local time). During this stage, problems and questions on the seven environmental key-themes: Nature preservation, natural resources, pollution, lifestyles, global threats, environmental policy and the Portuguese reality were also raised in addition to the questions focused on the theme of this year’s edition “The Millennium Development Goals” (Os Objectivos de Desenvolvimento do Milénio).

The categories “Environment and Art” (Ambiente e Arte) and “Environment and Citizenship” (Ambiente e Cidadania) are taking place at the same as the aforementioned category.  Until March 11, 2010 nearly 123 posters will be put in competition, being evaluated by a jury composed by members of the Horta City Hall, the Serralves Foundation and of Mais Momentos. The 25 projects submitted by teachers who participate in the category “Environment and Citizenship” will be evaluated by a jury composed by the following entities:  Portuguese Environment Agency, Biologists Association and the Campo Aberto Association.

The National Final will take place in the city of Horta on Faial Island in May with the partnership of the Government of the Azores. During the three-day final, the 100 young finalists will have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge on the environment, exchange experiences and to become acquainted with the island that will warmly welcome them.

The Environment Olympiads is one of the most important and ambitious educational projects at a national level. The Organising Commission of the 15th Environment Olympiads is composed by members of the School of Biotechnology of the Portuguese Catholic University, Quercus - National Association for Nature Conservation and of Zoomarine. This project has received the High Patronage of the Presidency of the Republic and it is supported by partnerships with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Águas de Algarve.

Further information on the categories, calendar and organisation are available at www.esb.ucp.pt /olimpiadas, through the email ([email protected]) or the telephone (916897553).
