Investing in young farmers' training empowers future of Azorean agricultural sector, said João Ponte

The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry stated on the island of Faial that investing in the training of young farmers empowers the future of the agricultural sector and ensures its sustainability.

“The ordinance regulating the Support Programme for the Training of Young Farmers (FORJAGRI) was published today in the Official Journal, which provides for the co-financing of expenses incurred by those who are starting their journey in the agricultural sector in the improvement of skills and professional knowledge," said João Ponte. According to him, this will be an important complement to the training already provided in the Azores.

The government official spoke at the ceremony, chaired by the President of the Government, Vasco Cordeiro, to mark the opening of the Juncal road on the first day of the Regional Government's visit to the island of Faial. The event also included the signing of the works contract for the construction of the water supply system in Fontaínhas, with capacity for 250 cubic metres, and the presentation of the project for the improvement of Carrasca rural road.

“In practice, we are talking about non-refundable support that will co-finance 50% of the expenses submitted, up to 2,000 Euros per application. Young farmers will have the possibility of attending vocational training initiatives with the aim of managing their farm more efficiently and applying a business management that allows them to boost their income," stressed João Ponte.

The ordinance published today stipulates that young farmers aged between 18 and under 40 can apply for support.

“The dynamics and willingness that has existed on the part of young people to dedicate themselves to agriculture in the Region is very important and should be cherished more than ever, as we are safeguarding the future sustainability of this economic activity that creates jobs and generates wealth,” said João Ponte. In this context, he noted that significant steps have been taken in this area throughout the legislative period, namely with approval of the Young Farmer programme, which includes several support measures addressed at innovation, modernisation and training.
