Government of the Azores and shipowners from São Miguel agree on reduction of horse mackerel catches

The Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources and the São Miguel horse mackerel shipowners have reached an understanding for the fisheries management of this species by reducing catches on the island's ports, thus preventing an oversupply and the subsequent loss of shipowners and fishers.

"The Government has been aware of the developments of the fish market in recent months." In fact, "the supply has exceeded the demand," Luís Neto Viveiros stressed, adding that we have sought to ´"find a balance that allows fishers to sell their catches at a fair price."

This agreement was reached at a meeting held in Ponta Delgada, which was attended by 14 shipowners from São Miguel, the Regional Director for Fisheries and the Regional Fisheries Inspector. It was the result of the contacts and regular meetings held with the industry representatives and organisations.

The Regional Secretary for Natural Resources revealed that "every time fishers go sea, they bring about 300-400 kilos more than the market can bear."

Luís Neto Nurseries stressed that shipowners are committed to the reduction of the fishing effort, whose results will be evaluated at the end of March. By this time, "a comprehensive analysis will be carried out."

This initiative is part of the measures the Government of the Azores has implemented with the purpose of promoting species with lower commercial value by involving associations and private entities.

Thus, we intend to bring added value to the fisheries sector, encourage domestic consumption and encourage quality exports. Additionally, the Regional Government aims to safeguard the dignity of fishers and improve their income as well as to ensure the future sustainability of fishing resources.

With the aim of supporting fishers and buyers, the Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources determined the reduction of fish market rates in the Azores in 2012.
