The Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea stated in Horta today that “there should an increasing adherence” to the Agenda 21 process in the Azores, a concept that was created at the Earth Summit which was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
For Álamo Meneses, it is essential that the local councils and the different Azorean decision-making entities, from all levels, “become acquainted with the process, playing an active role in this issue.”
Making statements at the occasion of a workshop on this theme, which was held in Horta today, the Regional Secretary expects that this meeting, as well as the one that was held in Ponta Delgada on Wednesday, “will bring a new energy for the Agenda 21 process.”
Álamo Meneses expressed his belief regarding the possibility of “motivating a growing number of entities and placing the Azores at a central place in terms of the commitments of the Agenda 21” over the coming months and years.
Furthermore, the Secretary reminded that the Agenda 21 corresponds to a “set of commitments, which may be made by entities at different levels, such as the local councils, the governments as well as the communities, which aim to provide an integrated environmental vision to all the decisions that are made in the management of these entities.”
Born at the Earth Summit, the Agenda 21 intends to create means and tools that will promote the sustainable development, thereby reversing the destruction process of the Environment and fighting against the inequalities between the several countries and regions of the World.
