Government supports project of the IMAR Centre

The Government of the Azores has allocated a subsidy 68,000 Euros to the Centre of the Institute of Marine Research (IMAR) to support the project “Rede Experimental de Educação para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável do Ambiente Marinho dos Açores” (Experimental Education Network for the Sustainable Development of the Marine Environment of the Azores).
An ordinance of the Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea, whose summary was published in the Official Journal on Wednesday, justifies the governmental support by the fact that the aforementioned project “is an important means to provide information and to raise the awareness for environmental education and training.”
In this ordinance, Álamo Meneses states that the “the management and conservation of wildlife resources as well as the promotion of environmental education and training” is among the competences of the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and the Sea.
According to the Regional Secretary, the IMAR Centre of the University of the Azores is a Research Unit integrated in the Institute of the Sea which is dedicated to basic and applied research under the Science and Technology of the Sea, Aquatic Environment and similar scientific fields.
The Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea also reminds that the IMAR Centre is a private, non-profit organisation that was created with the purpose of “developing marine science and technology in Portugal, through the integration of different subjects and the promotion of scientific cooperation, being in a privileged position to develop interdisciplinary projects.”
