Under the Regional Plan for the Eradication and Control of Invasive Species in Sensitive Areas (PRECEFIAS) on Corvo Island, the Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea in a joint effort with the Corvo Town Hall carried out another activity to research, monitor and eradicate outbreaks of invasive species, such as Hedychium gardnerianum (Kahili Ginger) and Canna indica (Indian Shot) this Summer. In order to eradicate these species, chemical control methods were used.
The efforts to eradicate invasive plants on Corvo Island have exclusively focused on the monitoring of the aforementioned species in order to permanently eradicate them on the island since 2004. The significant decrease of these plants, mainly in stream areas demonstrates that the eradication work carried out has been extremely positive.
In order to expansion of invasive species recently introduced on Corvo Island, the monitoring of the invasive plant Tetrapanax papyriferus (Rice-paper Plant) was carried out by the first time this year. The Government intends to eradicate the invasive species Carpobrotus edulis (Ice Plant) which is major threat for the endemic species Azorina vidalii.
