Elements of the Santa Maria Ecotec and the Desnível Association start, on Saturday, the exploration of five streams of this Eastern Group Island in order to equip them for canyoning.
Canyoning is a sport that consists in going down bodies of water and waterfalls, through rappel, and the Desnível Association, based in Cascais, dedicates itself to the promotion of adventure sport and the environment.
The initiative promoted by Santa Maria Ecotec, integrated in the commemorations of Earth Day, takes place during 4 days and will comprise the streams of Salto, Amaro, Grande, Panasco and Engenho.
With the accomplishment of this initiative, the Santa Maria Ecotec, part of the Regional Ecotecs Network, which is under the jurisdiction of the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and the Sea, intends to motivate youngsters to receive training in sports associated to the environment.
Canyoning is already practised on the islands of São Miguel, Flores and S. Jorge.
