The Oceanography and Fishing Department of the University of the Azores and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds discovered in the Azores a new species of bird.
It is called “oceanodroma monteiro”, nominated so in honour to the investigator Luís Monteiro, deceased in the accident with a SATA aircraft, in December of 1999, in the island of S. Jorge.
Only existent in the islets of Graciosa, this endemic sort presents slight differences regarding the sort “oceanodroma”, but sufficient, however, in order that they do not manage to reproduce between them.
Sizes and vocalizations are some of the characteristics that render incompatible the two populations now made sorts, thanks to the certification effectuated by genetic analysis.
The works that allowed identifying the new sort began in the decade of 90 and were initially guided by Luís Monteiro.
With support of the Government of the Azores, through the regional secretariats for the Environment and the Sea and for Education and Science, there were meantime developed the works that the investigator Mark Bolton and colleagues published now in the scientific magazine "Ibis".
