Capelinhos Volcano erupted 56 years ago

Faial Natural Park celebrates on Friday the 56th anniversary of the birth of the first submarine volcano to be ever observed throughout its activity. The Capelinhos Volcano has opened new doors to science and to the Azoreans.
For 13 months, the Capelinhos volcano also shaped the island of Faial and the people who saw it, changing their lives forever.

On September 27, we celebrate the telluric birth of the islands, science and life, those who lived through the eruption and survived it, those who left for a better future and the lives of those who remained here, facing insularity.

To celebrate this date, the Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources, through Faial Natural Park, offers discount vouchers valid until October 24 in all areas. Faial Natural Park was recently awarded a Special Mention at 2the 012 National Landscape Award for the project on the Protection and Management of the Capelinhos Volcano Landscape.

Visitors can benefit from discounts if they visit the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre on Friday (from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM) or Saturday (from 2 PM to 5:30 PM).

The Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Centre opened in August 2007 and was designed to preserve the landscape in the area affected by the eruption of Capelinhos Volcano on the westernmost tip of Faial Island in 1957/1958. The building is submerged in volcanic sands, buried to the height of the land before the eruption, and includes the old Lighthouse of Capelinhos.

In this space, visitors can embark on a virtual and interactive journey which, step by step, describes the volcanic phenomenon, opening up an important page in the scientific understanding of submarine volcanoes. The visit begins with the exhibition of a film that tells the story of the Azores in a universal context.
