Blue Flag hoisted for the first time at the Porto Pim beach

The blue Flag was hoisted for the first time on Friday at the Porto Pim beach, the most emblematic beach of Faial and one of the most famous beaches in the Azores.

For the Regional Director for Sea Affairs, who presided over the ceremony, this award is the result of the “ongoing work” that has been carried out over the past year, which ensured that “the environmental quality of the Porto Pim beach”.

Despite the unusual configuration of the beach regarding its exposure to the sea and the lack of sanitation in the city, it is a fact that “the 28 necessary criteria have been met” for the Blue Flag award, stated Frederico Cardigos.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the ceremony, which was also attended by the Mayor of Horta, the Regional Director also said that the management of the Porto Pim beach will be carried out by the Faial Natural Park.

On the occasion, Frederico Cardigos also made “a positive assessment” of Blue Flag campaign, which distinguished this year 33 beaches and beach areas and 4 marinas in the Azores.

According to the Secretary, the managing entities have undertaken “a great effort” to ensure the safety and environmental conditions as well as the respective associate services on Azorean beaches.

The Blue Flag award “enhances a visibility that is globally acknowledged” through the 3500 distinguished beach areas across the world, stressed the Regional Director.

Frederico Cardigos stressed, however, that “we do not want this award to be used artificially,” adding that this distinction “is matter of prestige and safety for beach users.”

If the Blue Flag process has costs, the truth is that it also represents an investment that justifies “an increased commitment” of local authorities as managing entities.

“With the Blue Flag, this area will become increasingly sought after and the services rendered may have higher costs,” stated the Regional Director for Sea Affairs.

In addition to Porto Pim, the Blue Flag was hoisted in the beach areas of Praia do Almoxarife and Varadouro on Friday.
