The Azorean Government has decided to create a Commission for Climate Change in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ComCLIMA), under the jurisdiction of the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and the Sea.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the Government Council on Thursday, being justified by the fact that this is “a matter of great importance for the sustainability of the planet.”
Regarding its creation, the Government also mentioned the geostrategic location of the Azores, being located in the centre of the North Atlantic, and its Archipelago dimension, which demand “an extra attention” from the Regional authorities.
Proposing “the basis for a Regional strategy of mitigation and adaptation to the climate change and developing a proposal for a Regional Plan on this issue” are the main goals of this entity.
In addition, providing technical and scientific monitoring, information and consultancy to the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and the Sea, regarding the various national and international negations on climate change, will be another of mission of the ComClima commission.
