The meeting of the South Western Waters Regional Advisory Council and the meetings of the Work Group of this Council, which is an official advisory body of the European Commission for the management of fisheries in the Atlantic, will be held on Faial Island on February 23 to 25 with the support of the Regional Government of the Azores.
The new rules to be established by the European Union for the deep-sea fisheries in Community waters, the projects on the management of traditional fisheries, the management of pelagic species, the issue of shark by-catch in deep water and the role of women in fisheries will the main the issues to be under discussion at these meetings.
These Work Groups of the South Western Waters Regional Advisory Council, which integrate our Region as well as other Outermost Regions and are managed by fishers, are a tool with a decisive influence in the management of the fishing effort in our waters that was created with the purpose of submitting recommendations and proposals for the defence of several interests in the field of sustainable management of resources to the European Commission, taking into account the sustainability of the fishing activity in addition to the safeguard of marine ecosystems.
