Azores defend marine potentialities at international forum

The Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea participated in a forum integrated in the celebrations of the European Day of Fisheries that are being held in the city of Gijón, where he presented paper titled “The Perspective of the Azores on the European Maritime Policy” on Wednesday afternoon.

During this presentation, integrated in the panel “A Global Overview of the European maritime Policy: the Perspective of Outermost Regions (ORs),” Álamo Meneses defended the importance of the Azorean seas in the context “of biodiversity, preservation of marine resources and interaction between the preservation of these resources and the fisheries issue.”

The panel, which counted upon the participation of representatives of the European Outermost Regions, analysed the importance of the ORs for the “definition of the EU maritime policy and the effects of this policy in those regions.”

Álamo Meneses considered that, in addition to registering a high level of participation, the debate was very productive, giving rise to various interesting ideas on the future of these policies in the European Union

The Azorean participation in this forum, which comprises other areas such as tourism, integrates the programme of the initiative “Azores – European Region of the Year 2010.”
