Future of dairy sector is permanent concern of the Azorean Government

The Regional Director for Agriculture stressed that the strategy for the dairy sector has always been and will continue to be defined in full coordination and proximity to production and industry. In this regard, he regretted the political attacks that hinder the sector and the industry instead of a contribution with proposals and feasible solutions.

"Accusing the Regional Government of the current situation of the dairy sector is a simplistic assessment on part of those who apparently know the sector and does not correspond to the truth. Nevertheless, they prefer to opt for out-of-context political attacks that strongly undermine the dialogue and strategy we must all aim at," said José Élio Ventura.

The Regional Director, responding to criticisms from PDS/Açores, considered that the political dimension and the mobilising capacity of those holding political responsibilities in the Region is evidenced in periods of major challenges. This is contrary to the easy criticism, disorganised ideas and lack of strategic proposals for the sector from the aforementioned political party.

For José Élio Ventura, it is essential to maintain concertation and the coordination of positions between production, industry and marketing so that the regional dairy sector may become stronger and better prepared to face challenges.

"None of the components involved in this area can resign from their responsibilities because they all depend on each other to succeed," said the government official. In this context, he stressed that the Regional Government has been an active participant in this strategy, as highlighted in the recent meeting of the Regional Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development.

As for the investments already made, both by regional production and industry, the Regional Director for Agriculture stated that these projects are fundamental to qualify and modernise dairy sector agents. Without them, they would not be prepared to compete with other industries, export to third countries, face new challenges and boost their profitability.

The Regional Director rejected the Government's approval of only certain investments and in accordance with its own rules, pointing out that everyone must comply with the same regulations under the Rule of Law, whether or not Community funds are involved.

José Élio Ventura also explained that the Regional Government does not subsidise milk in terms of quantity. There is only production aid, which is also available in other Outermost Regions as well as in all EU countries.
