Implementation rate of PRORURAL+ in the Azores above European average, says Regional Director

The Regional Director for Rural Development stated in Porto that PRORURAL+ is a fundamental tool in the development of the agricultural sector in the Azores. So far, it has reached an implementation rate of 52%, well above the European average, which stands at 32.5%.

"This good implementation rate corresponds to payments amounting to 175.5 million Euros in terms of public expenditure: 155 million Euros granted under EAFRD and 20.5 million Euros allocated by the Region," said Valter Braga. He spoke at the annual meeting of Rural Development Programmes (RDP) - Portugal 2014-2020.

The Regional Director added that the commitment rate of PRORURAL+ stands at 81%.

These data demonstrate the success and importance of PRORURAL+ for the Azores. Besides their economic impact in the Region, these funds contribute to the preservation of the environment and the diversification of the rural economy," Valter Braga said, adding, whether through agriculture, forestry or non-agricultural activities, they are essential for the well-being and the future of communities."

The Regional Director also pointed out that 45 million Euros were paid under measure 4 of PRORURAL+ as of October 31. They are aimed at the modernisation of farms as well at the processing and marketing of agricultural products.

Moreover, 3.3 million Euros were paid under the first installation of young farmers.

"Both PRORURAL + measures evidence the vitality and confidence of farmers in the future of the agricultural sector," stressed the government official.

So far, a total of 12,221 projects have been approved, corresponding to an investment of 317 million Euros and a public expenditure of 276 million Euros.

The PDR Portugal 2014-2020 is made up of 15 operational programmes, the programme for the Azores is designated as PRORURAL+.
