The students from the Lagoa Secondary School that participated in the I-SWEEP 2009 - International Sustainable World Project Olympiad, which was held in Houston, USA, received an honourable mention with “Rota das Lagoas, 27” project.
The project of this Azorean School was placed under the Senior Environment Category, one of the three areas of the event ranking system, which took place from April 10 to April 15, with the support of Cosmos Foundation.
The “Rotas das Lagoas, 27” Project, whose themes focus on lake environment, comprises a multiplicity of environmental, landscape, geological, social, touristic, historical and economic aspects, was placed in a group of the 20% best projects, amongst a total of 600 students and 480 projects, from 52 countries and 42 North American states.
Increasing youngsters’ interest and knowledge concerning planet Earth, having in mind sustainable knowledge, helping them to realise the importance of these issues and searching for viable solutions to these challenges are the goals of these Olympiads, focusing on the Environment, Energy and Engineering areas.
The trip of this group to the United States was supported by the Regional Government, which considers that international programmes like this one raise the prominence of the Azorean Region, and are the testimony of the existence of conditions for one to succeed in such diverse projects in the Region, as it happens with the case of the “Rotas das Lagoas, 27” project.
