Women make up two thirds of enrollment in university programmes in the 2007/2008 academic year. In the previous academic year, women obtained 469 of the 624 academic diplomas bestowed by the university.
According to the statistics yearbook of the National Statistics Institute (INE) 3,320 students were enrolled in university programmes in the region, of which 2,003 were women.
The following academic fields had the greatest number of enrollments in descending order: Business Management Sciences, Health Sciences and Social and Behavioural Sciences.
INE’s data also shows that higher learning institutions in the Azores, in the 2006/2007 academic year, attributed 168 diplomas in the domain of health sciences and 111 in the field of Business Management.
With regard to the education of teachers and professional training instructors, 109 students obtained their diplomas in Education Sciences and 86 in Social and Behavioural sciences.
