Vasco Cordeiro visited areas affected by bad weather on S. Miguel
The President of the Regional Government visited today the areas of Nordeste and Povoação that were affected by the bad weather that hit the island of S. Miguel last night, stressing the effectiveness of the intervention that has managed to safeguard the safety of the population.
"Fortunately, there were neither casualties nor personal injuries and that is the most important. As for the rest, we must roll up our sleeves and solve what we have to solve," said Vasco Cordeiro. The President of the Government visited the most affected areas by bad weather at dawn to follow the situation closely.
Vasco Cordeiro stressed the "excellent collaboration and performance of the municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação in monitoring this situation and providing all the means to solve it as soon as possible."
Speaking at the end of a visit to the areas that were most affected by the storm, the President of the Government revealed that the main damages occurred in the area between Povoação and Nordeste, stressing that the road between the two municipalities "is still closed."
"Right now, we are clearing roads in order to open them for traffic as soon as possible and we are identifying all situations that might influence the development of the situation in the coming hours since the weather warning is still in effect for the next few hours," said Vasco Cordeiro. After these interventions, we will carry out a full survey and assessment of the damages.
The heavy rain caused landslides in several areas, especially in the village of Pedreira in Nordeste and in the village of Água Retorta. There were five houses affected by landslides, three in Pedreira and two in Água Retorta, which had to be evacuated as a measure of precaution.
Several Regional Secretariats have mobilised teams and means for the cleaning and clearing of roads, which are still ongoing.
There are teams from the Regional Secretariats for Tourism and Transport, Agriculture and Environment, and Social Solidarity are still on the ground.
