Vasco Cordeiro recalls that proposal on sea management was unanimously approved by the Azorean Parliament

The President of the Government considered the announcement of PSD/Açores at the Parliament regarding the creation of a working group to clarify the powers of the State and the Region over the management of the Azores Sea as a worrying situation, which belittles the proposal unanimously approved by the Regional Assembly on this matter.

"If we are going to reopen at the National Assembly the discussion on how the powers of the State and the Region are coordinated in this matter, we will be rejecting what the Government and this Assembly have decided in the unanimously approved proposal," warned Vasco Cordeiro.

The Regional Government presented to the Regional Assembly Preliminary Law establishing the Bases of the National Maritime Spatial Planning and Management Policy, which was unanimously approved and then submitted to the National Assembly.

During the debate, held in late 2019, the member of the National Assembly elected by PSD Açores, Paulo Moniz, announced that his party "will propose the creation of a follow-up working group to hear all parties involved in order to find a solution representing the clarification and rigorous definition of the concepts and powers at stake."

“This announcement, from a political standpoint, is worrisome, because this has already been done by the Azorean Parliament. The powers at stake and the way in which they should be coordinated is something that has already been done by our Assembly," stressed Vasco Cordeiro. Therefore, it is important for the Legislative Assembly to clarify its position in the face of this new situation.

In his speech to the members of the Regional Assembly, Vasco Cordeiro also assured that the proposal decided submitted by the Region Parliament to the National Assembly, from the Government's point of view, addresses what needs to be done in terms of Sea management powers.

"We have no doubt about that.  This proposal is not just a political intention, but a proposal that opts for a specific and precise solution for the partition of powers," said Vasco Cordeiro.
